Ford Firsts: Mustang Mach E

Vineeth Mothe and Bahram Negahban
With the new sweep of electric vehicles taking over the market, Ford decided to put a twist on one of America’s most iconic sports cars.

For the past 50 years, the Ford Mustang has been the face of the sports car market and has been dominating Chevrolet’s Camaro and the Dodge Challenger. In the new wake of electric vehicles sweeping the market, the designers at Ford turned the Mustang coupe into a four-door crossover electric SUV. With its futuristic design, closed grill, laser headlights, and sloping roofline, Mach E flawlessly incorporates these classic Mustang cues into an innovative design. Originally announced back in November of 2019, the Mach E will be Ford’s ever all-electric SUV, and has backed over 40,000 preorders in the first month.

Mainly competing with Tesla’s Model Y, the Mach E has a base price of 43,995 dollars but can raise to over 60,000 dollars with more premium trims. The Mach E has five trim options that include the premium, the California route 1, and the GT which is the maximal level. Like its competitor the Model Y, the Mach E also has a choice between rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. Along with the option of an extended battery which allows the Mach E to travel for 305 uninterrupted miles. The GT variant of the Mach E is equipped with a 88 kWh battery pack that drives a 220 kW motor, which produces around 480 horsepower. This allows for a 0-60 time of just under 3.5 seconds.

For the 2021 model year, Ford debuted their new cutting-edge infotainment system, the Sync 4. Most of the interior design cues are influenced by Tesla who has been dominating the industry recently, especially with the vertically mounted center console. Along with an additional slim digital gauge cluster behind the steering wheel, The Mach E also features new technology such as the Heads Up Display, which displays all the driver’s critical information against the windshield.

The Mustang Mach E is a sportier version of Tesla’s Model Y, and with its namesake and style lore might appeal to many people who are still on the fence. Overall the Mach: E is an excellent first entry for Ford into the new electric era. Already winning the SUV of the year, the Mach E is one of the most highly anticipated cars of 2021.
