Acclaimed Writer Shares Wisdom, Warmth with Students
The Barstow School welcomed award-winning writer Jacqueline Woodson to campus on Wednesday, Oct. 9, for a memorable visit planned by the Inclusion, Diversity + Equity department.
Woodson is one of the country's most acclaimed writers of children's, YA and adult literature. In lower school, she shared from her book, "The Other Side," then engaged in a panel discussion and Q-and-A with middle and upper school students. She discussed her writing process, literary themes that include identity, race and resilience — and genuinely engaged with our community with her humor, wisdom and warmth. Students read some of her books, including the award-winning "Brown Girl Dreaming" and "The Day You Begin," in preparation for this visit.
In the evening, ID+E hosted a panel discussion and book signing open to the entire school community and other guests at the Dan & Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space. More than 200 people attended to hear Woodson speak with faculty members Scott Guldin, Trudy Blankenship and Kaiha Harris about her work, which includes fiction, essays and poetry. Her appearance was followed by a book signing in conjunction with Rainy Day Books.
Students, faculty and guests described the day is insightful and inspiring. Woodson's visit was the first in a speaker series funded by a grant from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation.
