Theatre Tradition Returns
Upper school students attended a KC Rep theatre production on Tuesday, Feb. 20, marking the return of the theatre field trip for the first time since 2019.
Freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors saw "Nina Simone: Four Women," by Christina Ham. The play traces Simone's transition from performer to activist during the Civil Rights movement. During this time, Simone famously declared, "An artist's responsibility is to reflect the times."
She was a gifted singer, songwriter and pianist and civil rights activist. Her music styles included classical, folk, gospel, blues and jazz. The production featured renditions of several of her songs.
"The students overwhelmingly enjoyed the play, and were excited to see live theatre," Mark Luce, English Department Chair, said. "The annual trip helps demonstrate the power and magic of theatre and gives the upper school a wonderful communal activity. It was just an absolute treat to allow everyone the opportunity to get out of the building and see such an impressive production. We can't wait to do it again next year."
The upper school play field trip made its return this week after a hiatus that began in March 2020, when it was canceled due to the COVID-10 pandemic. Over the last two decades students have seen a variety of performances — from a balletic "Dracula" to August Wilson's "Two Trains Running," "Cabaret" and "King Lear."
