Lower School Students Try the Buddy System

Students in first and fifth grades share a hallway this year, so they're using the buddy system to get to know each other.
As leaders in the lower school, fifth grade students take on a variety of responsibilities that prepare them to move up to middle school. They are student council leaders, morning greeters and now, buddies with new friends in first grade.

Fifth and first grade friends met up this month for a fun "get-to-know-you" activity. Buddy programs like this, as well as Barstow's Kindergarten-Senior Buddy tradition, pair older and younger students with benefits for both groups. Research shows they help students develop social and emotional learning skills that foster empathy, understanding, patience, cooperation and communication. Barstow's buddy programs encourage students to create community across all grade levels and often lead to long-lasting friendships.
