Student Celebrate National French Week
Barstow students in every division experienced un petit peu (a little bit) of France this week, thanks to upper school students who planned activities for National French Week.
French teacher Anne Hyvrard and library media specialist Beth Hafner collaborated on a lesson that combined culture, cuisine, landmarks and literature for fourth and fifth grade. Ms. Hafner showed students famous French monuments including the Louvre, the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower, and discussed French foods. Then Mlle Hyvrard's French students read Bonsoir Lune ("Goodnight Moon"), Les Trois Petits Cochons ("The Three Little Pigs")," and Dr. Seuss's Poisson Un, Poisson Duex, Poisson Rouge, Poisson Bleu ("One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish").
On Thursday, middle and upper school French language students took their language learning beyond the classroom with a lunch at Cafè Des Amis in Parkville. They practiced conversational skills and ordered classic French cuisine.
Other activities included hall decorations, French-themed menus in the servery for lunch and a screening of "Ratatouille" in the auditorium Friday evening. National French Week is sponsored each year by the American Association of Teachers of French as a way to take French out of the classroom and to generate continued interest in learning the language.
