Middle & Lower School Writers Earn Recognition

Barstow writers earned accolades—and one surprise visit—for essay writing this week.

Cena George, grade 6,  won first place in this year’s Kindest Kansas Citian essay contest, sponsored by Syndergy Services. Over 1,500 students submitted essays this year, with only one winner per grade level. Cena wrote her essay in Erika Sanders' Writer's Workshop and nominated her tap dance teacher, Mrs. Teri Day at Priscilla and Dana's School of Dance. Mrs. Day lost her father to cancer, and she holds a fundraiser each year to raise money for the National Brain Tumor Society. Cena describes her as being skillful, generous and supportive of her students.

Ines Nin, grade 6, also wrote a Kindest Kansas Citian essay in Erika Sanders’ Writer’s Workshop. She nominated Mr. Kevin, an employee at the Chick-fil-A restaurant in her neighborhood. She shared her essay with the franchise owner and Mr. Kevin and to show their appreciation, they visited Ines’s class on Thursday, March, 12, with a tray of chicken nuggets. The visit also included a special guest, the restaurant chain’s famous cow mascot.

And the recognitions for our young writers continues! Congratulations to Lochlan Cetinguc and Ruth Guldin, grade 5, DAR essay contest chapter winners for Mission Hills and Shawnee Mission. Each student read their essay at an awards presentation, where they received a certificate and a medal. Lochlan will also be recognized in Wichita later this month as the grade level winner for the state of Kansas.
