District Team Champions

The Barstow girls tennis team took on Notre Dame de Sion at the Barstow courts on Wednesday and brought their best tennis of the year, walking off with a 5-0 win against a solid Sion team.  In their fashion, the girls swept the doubles to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
At #1 doubles Atra Biria and Anya Stanojevic broke a 1-1 early tie to grab the lead.  Behind Atra's strong all-around game, solid first serves, and powerful groundstrokes, as well as Anya's best serving day of the year, the girls rolled 8-1.  Well-targeted serves and aggressive net play left few opportunities for their opponents.  At #2 doubles Rose Biria and Emilia Prier jumped up early 4-0.  Rose's strong and well-placed first serve as well as her strong baseline game just overwhelmed their opponent.  Emilia demonstrated her impressive improvement in the last few weeks with steady serves and consistent crosscourt returns that  Rose, who played her most aggressive net yet, finished off time and again.
At # 3 doubles Sonya Shkuta and partner Duha Azaz dominated from the beginning and completed the doubles sweep.   Duha had her most consistent return game yet that enabling Sonya to roam the net and put away ball after ball.
The Knights needed only two more wins from the six singles to move to sectional.   At #1 singles,  Atra served well and brought her strongest baseline game yet and finished off a strong Sion player, 6-0, 6-0.  At # 2 doubles, Rose followed suit with the winner after winner for a similar result, 6-0, 6-0, and the Knights 5th point.  With only 4 courts, only two other singles matches in progress, and at #3, Sonya won her first set 6-2, and was ahead in the second, and Anya did. the same with a 6-0 first set before the 5th and deciding match was completed.  Congratulations girls!  The team moves to sectionals which this year will be held at our home courts against 14-0 Springfield Catholic High School.  The match begins at 4:00 on Monday.  The team would love to have as many students and teachers there as possible.  The winner of that match moves to the final four.
