Preschool Students Learn from the Helpers
Some of our youngest students are learning about the importance of community helpers.
Through creative play, hands-on activities and special visits, students in Ms. Freeland's and Ms. Taylor's preschool classes are learning about the value of service, the people who choose careers that benefit others — and even how they can start being a community helper at a young age.
On Friday, Feb. 16, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas '05 made a brief visit to Barstow and dropped in on Ms. Taylor's class. The students were excited to share what they have learned about community helpers with the mayor!
Firefighters visited preschool students last week, offering tours of their truck and explaining how they serve their community in many different ways. Students have also learned about the roles of police officers, construction workers, doctors, dentists and veterinarians. The dramatic play area in Ms. Freeland's classroom is set up as an animal clinic, and students are collecting donations for area shelters as part of their unit.

- It promotes safety by teaching kids how to recognize trusted adults, and who to ask for help.
- It Inspires interest in possible careers. When children meet the people who keep our communities safe, clean and orderly, they’re learning about lots of different exciting jobs.
- It encourage interest in one’s own community and in pitching in to help, even at a young age.
