New Murals Brighten Barstow's Halls

Students and parents entering the building after Thanksgiving break may have noticed the new colorful wall murals in the lower school.
These murals in Price Hall and the South Pod are part of a project, now about halfway done, which was made possible through a grant from the Kauffman Foundation that Barstow received in the spring of 2024.

Inclusion, Diversity + Equity co-directors Jessica Chanos and David Muhammad are working with artist Katie Lee at KC Murals to brighten up spaces in each division throughout the school with wall murals that reflect the community’s values of inclusion and belonging. In her words, Chanos wants these spaces to feel like “a warm hug.”

The planning and conceiving of each mural has been a collaborative process inviting feedback from students in each division, allowing them to vote and make suggestions for the art to reflect their interests and passions.

The creative process continues in middle and upper school, where additional murals will be painted during winter break. Students interested in working with KC Murals over break can email Jessica Chanos for more information.
