Grade 3 students kicked off their unit on difference makers this week by making a positive impact on people and animals in the Kansas City area.
On the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 14, students had their first difference making opportunity. They measured, cut and combined materials such as fabric and cardboard to make toys for cats and dogs waiting to be adopted at Wayside Waifs. The combined third grade classes produced a total of over 100 toys, which will be donated and used for the enrichment of animals in the shelter.
Students then took a field trip to Giving the Basics, a nonprofit organization in Kansas City, Kansas, that collects and distributes personal hygiene products to members of the community who need them. After learning about how organizations like Giving the Basics work to make a positive difference in the community, students helped sort and package hygiene items including diapers and pull-ups to be distributed to local families.
These opportunities to help the community are part of an overall learning experience about what it means to be a difference maker. In addition to discovering their own potential to make a difference, third graders are working on a research and writing project about an individual of their choice that they believe has made a positive impact in their community or in the world. During a presentation next week, they will share what they have learned about the individuals that they have chosen to research and the differences that these people have made.
