Acclaimed children’s author and speaker Gita Varadarajan visited the Barstow campus on Friday, Jan. 17.
Ms. Varadarajan met with lower school students in the morning, then led an in-depth writing workshop for fourth graders. She guided students through several short writing exercises, encouraging them to think about setting, dialog and character development. She used the story of "The Three Billygoats Gruff" to illustrate the importance of showing, not telling, and she encouraged each student who presented their writing aloud to read with confidence and pride in their work.
In the afternoon, middle and upper school students participated in a panel discussion with Ms. Varadarajan, where they had the opportunity to ask questions about her books, her life and her career as an author.
Ms. Varadarajan is the author of several popular Scholastic titles, including “My Bindi,” “My Saree” and “Save Me a Seat,” which is included on the fourth grade summer reading list. She moved from India to the United States with her family in 2010 and currently lives in Princeton, New Jersey where she teaches fourth grade. She has a Master’s degree in Literary Education from Teachers College, Columbia University.
