2025-2026 School Year - Assistant Director of Lower School
The Barstow School is seeking an organized, compassionate and communicative individual to serve as the Assistant Director of Lower School. This position will include work with students in grades 1 - 5 and requires the willingness to develop strong relationships with families in the community. Ideal candidates will have a master’s degree in education or school leadership and a strong background working with lower school students, preferably in an independent school setting.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Director of Lower School will be responsible for and will serve as the first point of contact regarding various aspects of the lower school experience.
Student Discipline & Student Life:
- Manage the lower school-wide positive support system for all students.
- First point of contact regarding minor disciplinary infractions, including investigation of issues, behavioral consequence recommendations, and communication with families.
- Responsible for maintaining an accurate and timely organizational system tracking historical student behavior patterns, consequences, and communication.
Academics:
- Track & review the academic performance of lower school students, providing the first line of intervention strategies when issues arise.
- Identify and advise the Director of Lower School on recommended curricular changes and updates.
- Design and implement professional development opportunities for lower school faculty and staff.
Administrative and Additional:
- Serve as a highly visible member of the lower school administrative team, attending school events throughout the year, meeting with prospective and current families, speaking at school functions, and being a role model for the division and school.
- Assist the Director of Lower School in teacher observation, evaluation and professional development.
- Assist the Director of Lower School in short and long term planning and strategy execution, including various other duties as assigned.
