Learning about community leaders and citizenship starts in Barstow early childhood, so Election Day gave kindergartners an opportunity for hands-on lessons about both.
In all three kindergarten classrooms, students listened to the book, "Duck for President," which traces the main character's journey from the farm to the White House. Along the way, students learned some of the mechanics of America's election process.
After hearing the story, students cast their own votes for either Duck or his challenger, Farmer Brown. They learned that each voter gets one ballot and that their selections are private. One by one, they marked their ballots behind a screen and received an "I Voted" sticker. When the results were tallied, it was a landslide win for Duck, defeating Farmer Brown 38-5.
