Grade 5 Students Engineers D.C. Monuments

In preparation for their week-long trip to Washington D.C, fifth graders designed, modeled and 3D printed some of the national monuments that they will visit.
Students have been learning how to use the 3D-modeling program TinkerCAD during their class time at IDEA Space for the last few weeks. They used that knowledge to design and 3D print the monuments in Washington D.C. that they have been studying and will visit on their upcoming trip. They practiced measuring individual shapes, removing gaps and keeping their designs simple enough to print successfully at a small size.

Other recent fifth grade lessons have also been geared towards preparing for the trip. In Social Studies, students considered the meaning of the words in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution by putting parts of both well-known documents into their own words. For a math challenge, students calculated what they could fit inside the volume of a suitcase. And because they will not bring electronics with them on the trip, they practiced some group games and activities that can help pass time during travel and encourage good communication in intense situations.

The group departs on Monday, April 28 and returns Friday, May 2.
