Distinguished Author to Spend Day at Barstow
Jacqueline Woodson, a celebrated voice in children's and young adult literature, will visit The Barstow School on Wednesday, Oct. 9, for a series of inspiring events for students of all ages.
Woodson is the author of notable and award-winning works that include “The Day You Begin,” "The Year We Learned to Fly," "Show Way," and “Brown Girl Dreaming.” Her stories often explore themes of identity, family and resilience, captivating readers around the world. Students have been reading her books in preparation for these exciting sessions.
After serving as the Young People’s Poet Laureate from 2015 to 2017, Jacqueline Woodson was named the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature by the Library of Congress for 2018–2019. She was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 2020. Later that same year, she was named a MacArthur Fellow.
During her visit, students in every division will attend an author presentation. In lower school, the fifth grade student council will introduce Jacqueline Woodson, and she will discuss “The Day You Begin.” The book is about feeling different, but finding the courage to move forward and make connections.
Middle & upper school students will participate in a panel discussion focused on “Brown Girl Dreaming,” a National Book Award Winner that explores Woodson's experiences growing up as an African American in 1960s and 1970s South Carolina and New York through poetry.
Families, students, faculty and staff are invited to a conversation and book signing with Jacqueline Woodson at the Dan & Cassidy Towriss IDEA Space that evening at 6 p.m. She will engage in a discussion moderated by faculty members Trudy Blankenship, Scott Guldin and Kaiha Harris. This free session is open to all ages, but registration is required. Books for the signing the follows are available to preorder here.
