Biria Sisters Win State Doubles Championship
Senior Atra Biria and her sister, freshman Rose Biria, put on an impressive display of tennis at the Cooper Center in Springfield, Missouri on Friday, Oct. 25.
The duo started off facing MICDS from St. Louis. With a 2-2 tie in the first four games, Atra and Rose broke for a 3-2 lead and held serve. Rose’s powerful baseline game was complemented beautifully by Atra's aggressive net play, and the pair defeated MICDS 6-2, 6-0 and moved on to the championship that afternoon.
Atra and Rose took on a pair from Parkway West, a St. Louis school that had come to the tournament 21-1, in the finals. Using well placed serves and a commanding net presence, they ran off the next six games for a 6-1 first set. In the second set, they broke from a 1-1 tie to roll the opposing team 6-1, 6-1 and win the championship.
Atra and Rose lost only four games out of eight sets, ultimately winning the 10th state title for the Knights. They will lead the entire team to the Missouri Class 2 Final Four with games on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Go Knights!
