Zahra Khumri, grade 8, won first place for her grade level in the 2024 Daughters of the American Revolution American History Essay Contest. Her essay will be submitted for judging at the state level.
Zahra’s essay, “Letters from Edenton,” was selected for being interesting, historically accurate and well-written with rich vocabulary. She is invited to share her essay at the next meeting of the Shawnee Mission DAR chapter.
The essay topic for grades 5-8 this year was, “Enjoying a new kind of Tea Party,” focusing specifically on protests led by women during the 1770s protest movement by American Colonists against British taxes and laws. The DAR essay contest encourages young people to explore American history through creative writing. Lower and middle school students at Barstow have consistently earned recognition in this contest, including several already this year.
