All Hands On Set for "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child"
The upper school play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (High School Edition)” opened on Thursday, March 6, and continues Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.
The play, which picks up 19 years after the end of the Harry Potter book series, showcases the talents of performers and crew alike.
This production includes five seniors participating in their final Barstow show. "Cursed Child" is Dillon Dixon's fourth production at Barstow. Pamela Kuti and Mateo Rose have each participated in two Barstow plays. Miles McEachen says goodbye to the Barstow stage after 13 performances; for Lauren Rothhaas, this is performance number 12.
While the primary participants are upper school students, a group of middle school students and a faculty member also stepped into roles. Sixth grader Quinn Clevenger joined the cast for her first theatre performance at Barstow. Other middle schoolers in the cast include seventh graders Jahnavi Kakarala, Gia Kahn and Shambavi Narayanan. Seventh graders Shalimar Hartnett, Lilly Lea and Skye Mueller provided support as stage crew members and ensemble performers.
Middle and upper school art teacher Amanda Lea joined the cast to play a variety of adult characters, including the “Trolley Witch,” who passes out snacks on the train as well as the infamous professor Dolores Umbridge. Ms. Lea also assisted with prop creation.
The unique set, designed and built by Mr. Bob Kohler and Dr. Josh Markley with the help of the student crew, includes several large pieces that sit on wheeled platforms and can be moved and positioned anywhere onstage. Mimicking the magical moving staircases depicted in the books and movies, the staircase set pieces shift and change direction throughout the performance, sometimes with musical accompaniment.
Remaining performances are Friday, March, 7 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 8, at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here.
