Barstow Offers College Essay Workshop for Rising Seniors
The Barstow School College Counseling and English Departments are offering a college essay writing workshop for rising seniors this summer.
The workshop is August 4-8, 9 a.m.-noon on the Barstow campus. Students who enroll in the workshop will receive instruction from English Department Chair Mark Luce and upper school English teacher Scott Guldin. Both faculty members are experienced AP English instructors who will guide and support students as they get begin the essay writing process.
The college essay allows applicants to share their unique voice, personality and experiences with admissions officers at their selected schools. Beyond grades and test scores, a successful essay distinguishes the writer as an individual with the potential to become part of a school’s culture and community. According to the College Board, the organization that administers the SAT entrance exam, a well-written essay can elevate an applicant’s standing when an admissions committee is choosing among students with similar qualifications.
Barstow’s English curriculum focuses on strong writing at every grade level. In upper school, students practice creative, analytical and research writing, with an emphasis on the college essay at the beginning of senior year. This optional workshop is a head start that can assist a student in understanding the role of the college essay, brainstorming potential subjects and adopting best practices for crafting a compelling, effective and succinct, all with individualized instruction from our faculty experts.
The cost to participate is $210. Space is limited. Registration is open exclusively to Barstow rising seniors through April 30. It will open to the public on May 1.
