Coding Team Wins Virtual Competition

Two upper school computer science teams battled in the HPE CodeWars virtual competition on Saturday, March 1—and Knights Team 1 claimed first place!

HPE CodeWars is a national coding competition for students in grades 8-12 that gamifies computer science by challenging teams to solve programming problems in real time. Juniors Carlos Salazar and Eshan Patel and freshman Maaz Hawa scored 117 points to top the novice division in their very first CodeWars appearance. Not only was that the highest virtual score; it was also the highest score posted by any in-person team participating from California, Colorado, New Jersey and Texas. Juniors Sam Golladay and Rohan Thomas and sophomore Saam Biria also represented Barstow in the elite Hewlett Packard Enterprise competition.

These strong CodeWars performances demonstrate students’ abilities to design systems, iterate through technical approaches, collaborate and communicate effectively—key tenets of Barstow’s STEAM learning curriculum. Opportunities to participate in coding programs and contests continues to grow in upper school, starting with CyberPatriots security competition and expanding to include CodeWars. This weekend, Salazar, Patel and Golladay will travel to Hendrix College in Arkansas with computer science teacher Scott Daniel for another regional contest.
