Varsity, novice and middle school debate teams competed in recent tournaments, winning multiple awards.
Varsity debate competed in the Arizona State HDSHC Invitational in Tempe, Arizona, Jan. 10-13, with seniors Tyler Bauman and Haddie Schedler and juniors Darin Goodman and Aun Hathiari winning awards. Haddie and Tyler also won awards at the Iowa City Cross River Classic in Iowa City, Iowa, Jan. 24-26. Haddie took first place for the Varsity Speaker Award, while Tyler took third, and both were quarterfinals winners.
Novice debaters won two awards at the Liberty North Classic Invitational in Liberty, Missouri. The speech and debate tournament was held Jan. 17-18 and featured 37 Missouri schools. Two Barstow teams entered the competition and both won awards. Freshmen Radvin Shahbazian and Brandon Willson placed fifth in the Novice Policy Debate division, while freshman Jay Schonhoff and sophomore Leo Karaichev earned seventh.
Middle school debaters took home nine awards in Student Congress at the Gateway Middle School Tournament on Thursday, Jan. 23. Barstow earned third place in school sweepstakes points, a prize based on the total number of awards won by each team. Seventh grader Adam Hammoud, attending his first debate tournament, won first place in Student Congress Chamber Three. Congratulations to everyone who competed! All awards are listed below:
