World Language Students Earn Film Awards

The results from the Foreign Language Film Film Festival on Friday, April 4 are in. Barstow students won a total of 39 awards for their original films in Spanish, French and Chinese.
Sky MacIvor, junior, won nine awards for her movie, “XY”:
  • Best Overall Spanish Film, second place
  • Best Overall Drama Across All Languages, first place
  • Best Advanced Spanish Film, second place
  • Best Advanced Spanish Drama, first place
  • Best Overall Spanish Drama, first place
  • Best Ensemble Acting in a Spanish Film, first place
  • Best Technical Achievement in a Spanish Film, third place
  • Most Original Spanish Film, first place
  • Best Spanish Script, second place

Loch Beagle, senior, Cole Mueller, sophomore, Betsi Waldeck, senior, and Mimi Wood, junior won eight awards for their film, “A Mission for the King”:
  • Best Overall French Film, second place
  • Best Advanced French Film, second place
  • Best French Fairy Tale, first place
  • Best Technical Achievement in a French Film, first place
  • Most Original French Film, first place
  • Best French Script, second place
  • Best Use of Language in an Advanced French Film
  • Best Ensemble Acting in a French Film, second place

Juniors Sanjeev Adma, Izah Bhuiyan, Sam Golladay and Rohan Thomas and seniors Pamela Kuti and Issac Shimamoto won first place in the UCM Flash Film Contest this year for their film, “Los dados prohibidos.” Flash Film contestants are given one hour to write, film, edit, subtitle, and premiere a short film on the day of the film festival. Unknown until the day of the festival are the theme of the film, a prop that must be used, and an action that must be performed.


Saam Biria, sophomore, Rex Parker, sophomore and Lex Schlesener, sophomore won five awards for their film, 蹤跡 (“Traces”):
  • Best Overall Chinese Film, second place
  • Best Intermediate Chinese Film, first place
  • Best Chinese Drama, first place
  • Best Technical Achievement in a Chinese Film, second place
  • Best Ensemble Acting in a Chinese Film, second place

Juniors Izah Bhuiyan and Noora Fatima won five awards for their film, “Trajes”:
  • Best Overall Spanish Film, third place
  • Best Advanced Spanish Film, third place
  • Best Advanced Spanish Mystery, second place
  • Most Original Spanish Film, second place
  • Best Use of Language in an Advanced Spanish Film

Aun Hathiari, junior won three awards for his film, 坐禪 (“Meditation”):
  • Best Elementary Chinese Film, first place
  • Best Chinese Drama, second place
  • Best Use of Language in an Elementary Chinese Film

Miya Parker, grade 8, Inaya Gadit, junior and sophomores Duha Azazand Emily Nguyen won two awards for their film, 和諧的味道 (“A Taste of Harmony”):
  • Best Intermediate Chinese Film, second place
  • Best Use of Language in an Intermediate Chinese Film

Freshmen Lilly Simpson and Juniper Sterrett won an award for their film, 球場女王(“Queen of the Court”):
  •  Best Elementary Chinese Film, second place

Sophomores Darin Goodman and Ethan Jiang and junior Elliott Osman won an award for their film, 無瑕幻想 (“Flawless Illusion”):
  •  Best Chinese Comedy, second place

Rachel Jacobs, junior won an award for her film, 影子王國 (“Shadow Kingdom”):
  • Best Chinese Fairy Tale, first place

Sanjana Akkulugari, junior won an award for her film, 小丑的冒險 (“Clown’s
Adventure”):
  • Best Chinese Fairy Tale, second place

Olivia Taffe, junior won an award for her film, 奇怪的植物學 (“Strange Botany”):
  • Best Chinese Script, second place

Juniors Carlos Salazar, Sam Golladay, Eshan Patel, Aun Hathiari and Rohan Thomas won an award for their film, “Los juegos del calamar”:
  • Best Use of Language in an Advanced Spanish Film
