The girls tennis team outlasted the weather and clinched third place in the Pembroke Hill Tennis Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 20.
Facing some of the strongest teams in Kansas and Missouri, Knights placed third. Senior Atra Biria and freshman Rose Biria won both, the A doubles championship and the tournament doubles title with strong play against John Burroughs-St. Louis. In #1 singles, Sonya Shkuta won 8-6 against a tough player from St. Teresa Academy.
Knights take on STA and Pembroke The team faced Sion on Wednesday, Sept. 25. Freshman Anya Stanojevic took #2 singles with an impressive 8-3 win, and freshman Sonia Akkulugari filled in with varsity for the first time. On Thursday, Sept. 26, the team squared up against Pembroke Hill. Despite a 2-7 loss, the girls had several competitive matches. At #1 doubles, Sonya Shkuta and Anya Stanojevic played their strongest doubles of the year. The Knights played a tight match down just one game throughout. At 5-6, Anya and Sonya became active at the net and cut off several strong shots for winners and rolled off two games in a row to force a tiebreaker at 7-7. In the tiebreaker, they continued their aggressive net play and finished with a 8-7 victory.
To finish the day at #1 singles, Sonya faced a tough #1 for the 8-6 win.
