Add another trophy to the case! The girls tennis team brought their best play of the year in the district championship on Wednesday, Oct. 16, and came away with a 5-0 win over Notre Dame de Sion.
At #1 doubles Atra Biria and Anya Stanojevic broke a 1-1 early tie to grab the lead. Behind Atra's strong all-around game, and Anya's best serving day of the year, the girls rolled 8-1. Well-targeted serves and aggressive net play left few opportunities for their opponents.
At #2 doubles Rose Biria and Emilia Prier jumped up early 4-0. Rose's strong first serves as well and her baseline game overwhelmed their opponent. Emilia demonstrated her impressive improvement in the last few weeks with steady serves and consistent crosscourt returns that Rosefinished off time and again.
At # 3 doubles Sonya Shkuta and Duha Azaz dominated from the beginning and completed the doubles sweep. Duha had her most consistent return game yet that enabled Sonya to roam the net and put away ball after ball.
The Knights needed only two more wins from the six singles to move to sectional. At #1 singles, Atra finished off a strong Sion player, 6-0, 6-0. At # 2 doubles, Rose followed suit, 6-0, 6-0 and the Knights fifth point. At #3, Sonya won her first set 6-2, and was ahead in the second; Anya did the same with a 6-0 first set before the fifth and deciding match.
The team moves to sectionals held at Barstow's home courts against 14-0 Springfield Catholic High School on Monday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m. The team would love to have as many students and teachers there as possible. The winner of that match moves to the final four.
Previous Play In the district semifinals on Tuesday, Oct. 15, the team used their doubles play to roll to a quick decision over Grian Valley. At #1 doubles senior Atra Biria teamed with freshman Anya Stanojevic and used strong serves, Anya's strong net game and Atra's strong baseline game to roll to an 8-2 win. At #2 doubles, freshman Rose Biria and sophomore Emilia Prier dominated from the start. In similar fashion to the #1 doubles, Rose dominated from the baseline and Emilia was steady from the net as they rolled to an 8-0 win. In singles both Rose and Atra finished strong for a 5-0 Barstow win.
