From emancipation to gentrification, from hardscrabble lives to joyous blues, the plays trace the arc of Black life in America. These searing works will stay with you long after the last page is turned. We will discuss four of Wilson's plays and examine music, economics, race, gender, and the implications of the Great Migration: Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, The Piano Lesson, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, and Gem of the Ocean.
